Well, Smack talk'n once again, met up w/Dave Ogborn from Portsmouth, OH today. Dave was kind enough to introduce me to Mark Browning, owner of Ol' Dad's Outdoor Store in Portsmouth. After showing Mark the Gizz4, Dave took me down to Greenup dam. Hybrids were in and out, I caught 3 of 4 hook ups. Dave caught about the same, maybe one or two more. Water was muddy, and it was COLD and windy, but the water was still warm enough for the wipers. Biggest was 22", next to it was 19".
After a decent afternoon with Jeff yesterday at the Ohio River Greenup Locks, I decided to dress a little warmer and go again today. Only caught 23, 14 of which were on a blue Gizz. what a lure. I was even bringing one in and another tried to steal it from the 6 lber I was landing. So it looks like they are starting to get in the aggressive mode. Went to Portsmouth to fish the Scioto River after that and the White bass were hitting the white Gizz. BIG white bass. 3 whites and 6 more hybrids there. A good day. By the way, they practically ripped my rod from my hands. That's how hard they hit it.
I now have a new favorite Smallmouth lure, the Gizz4. The weather here this past Saturday was so bad that there was no use in getting up before daylight in pursuit of my favorite fish; the striper. The temperature wasn’t that bad (in the low 30’s) but the wind was howling with gusts of over 30mph and the skies were bluebird as could be so I just slept in for a change. I called my fishing partner after lunch and convinced him to hit one of the Smallmouth rivers. He finally shows up at about 4:00 and we still have a 30 minute ride to the river. At this point, I’m thinking we are just wasting time.
We finally get the boat in the water with about an hour and a half of daylight left. The water was higher than normal and borderline muddy; very murky to say the least. I tie on the Gizz4 and my buddy ties on a crawfish plug. I chose the Gizz4 because it has a larger profile, tons of flash and runs at about the right depth for the water we are fishing. We cast for about 10 minutes without a bite before the Gizz gets slammed, or should I say “Smacked”. It’s a good two pounds or better. We keep drifting and I put 3 more good quality Smallies in the boat. At this point, my buddy is digging in his box and trying different plugs before he finally hooks up with a Smallie. To make a long story short, he did manage to catch up with me in numbers but not in quality.
With about 30 minutes of daylight left, we are both casting the Gizz4 and put another dozen really good quality Smallies in the boat. Our technique was simple, we just cranked it down to the bottom slowly and then we worked it slowly, throwing in some jerk bait action occasionally. All in all, we put 30 fish in the boat under less than ideal conditions and the biggest ones were all 2 – 4lbs.
I gotta just to say thanks to Smack tackle! Thru Catch-n.Com I was introduced to Smack Tackle and their Gizz-3 & Gizz-4 baits. If you don't have one, I'm officially recommending that you order one..or two..or ten. They are great shad imitating baits.
In the Chicagoland area there are only a small handful of people who have cracked the 20" mark for small mouth bass. I was one of the fortunate ones who had 6 to my credit. Now...you can make that 8! I caught 2 more over 20" in a few casts last week on a Gizz-4. The process was simple. As I fished I watched for smallies driving spawning shad to the surface and unloading on them. I'd quickly throw the Gizz4 to that spot and give it a few twitches, a rip, a few more twitches...and BAM! THIS was my 2ND cast of a Gizz4!
Not bad. 2 casts and I hit my 7th 20"+ smallie. The fun kept on going. With the right bait and a pretty easy pattern of letting the big smallies tell me exactly where they were, I had fun for a few more casts.
Was it a fluke? Would their bait work in any other situation? Um... Yeah. That's the short answer. Drag it past a prespawn largemouth and see what happens.
So..anyway, just wanted to say thanks to Smack Tackle for making a great bait that puts 2 more trophy smallies in the customfish.com books! We appreciate it.
